Government launches new health care information website

The Obama administration’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, announced Thursday that the White House has launched an informational website to help Americans understand the benefits and programs available to them as a result of new health care legislation.

“For too long, it was confusing to identify your options and compare plans. HealthCare.gov makes comparison shopping easier with a new health insurance finder that allows users to answer a few basic questions and receive information about insurance options that could work for them. The site makes a system that thrived on complication and confusion easier to understand,” says Sebelius in a blog post.

The site also contains timelines detailing when various provisions of recently passed health care laws will come into effect, and Sebelius said that the government plans to put even more information on the site in the coming months.

Information about the myriad insurance companies from which consumers can purchase coverage is of critical importance, experts say, given the fact that many Americans do not have a lot of wiggle room in their personal finances after the economic downturn.
